Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report - September 2022 (Sept. 12, 2022)

The September issue of the Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report is 18 pages, with 32 graphs, and 15 tables.

Markets Report:

  • Flats - Vietnam’s import market for commercial-grade hot-rolled coil continued its decline in August, as low-priced HRC from multiple origins competed for buyers. Despite a slight Chinese steel market rebound, Vietnam’s HRC market remained weak, with low-priced import offers from Taiwan pressing the market down.
  • Longs - Southeast Asian rebar import market prices remained unchanged throughout August. Weak import demand has reduced activities among market participants, preventing price increases in the past month.
  • Semis - The Southeast Asian billet market was flat for a long time after a brief rise in early August. Weak finished steel markets and an uncertain economic outlook in the region and China continue to depress market sentiment.
  • Raw Materials - Vietnam's scrap market rebounded sharply at the end of August after continued negativity. Steel mills have increased demand for scrap, but Japanese sellers are less willing to make offers to Vietnam as they wait first for bids from South Korea's Hyundai and Posco.

Production:  Southeast Asian hot metal output in August extended July's rebound. Vietnamese and Malaysian mills led the regional jump in production, with only Indonesia's Dexin Steel reporting a fall in production last month. With the end of the rainy season and demand returning, the expected increase in production by Southeast Asian mills has strengthened.
