South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 20 - Expanded Monthly Edition (May 19, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 21, published 19th May 2021.  This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region.  Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: Southeast Asian blast furnaces continued to show broadly steady activity last week, but with some lower readings for Hoa Phat Dung Quat.
  • Flats: The price rally in Vietnam's hot rolled coil market continued during early last week. However, bullish market sentiment appears to have shifted after the deep downward corrections in Chinese steel futures.
  • Longs: Wire rod suppliers have sharply pushed up offer prices in the ASEAN region.
  • Semis: The downturn in China's steel futures has cooled the billet import market. Billet importers in Southeast Asia are taking a wait-and-see stance and are waiting for clarity after China's market downturn.
  • Raw Materials: The Vietnamese scrap import market rose sharply after last week's Kanto Tetsugen export tender.
