USS lays off 38 at Gary
US Steel has laid off about 38 of its United Steelworkers employees at its Gary, Indiana, works as a cost-cutting measure, Kallanish learns from a union representative.
USW District 7 director Mike Millsap says the company determined it had too many maintenance employees in a skilled trades training program and instituted a temporary layoff. Otherwise, staffing levels at Gary are near normal, he says.
