US retaliates with steel tariffs against Turkey
The US will boost its steel tariffs on Turkey back to 50% and cut off negotiations on a $100 billion trade agreement in response to Turkey’s military actions in Syria, Kallanish understands.
“This order will enable the United States to impose powerful additional sanctions on those who may be involved in serious human rights abuses, obstructing a ceasefire, preventing displaced persons from returning home, forcibly repatriating refugees, or threatening the peace, security, or stability in Syria,” President Donald Trump writes in a statement released on Twitter. “The order will authorize a broad range of consequences, including financial sanctions, the blocking of property, and barring entry into the United States.”
The US originally increased its Section 232 tariffs on Turkey in response to the country holding a US citizen as a political prisoner. Those 50% tariffs were reduced to the standard 232 25% in May.
