UK drives Turkey’s scrap import increase in March
Turkey’s scrap imports grew 40.3% year-on-year to 1.86 million tonnes in March, mainly on the back of a surge in intake from the UK. The average value/tonne of these imports declined to $198/t from $308/t a year earlier, Kallanish calculates from the latest Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data.
The scrap-rebar spread narrowed to $131/t in March from $146/t a year ago, but remained flat over February, keeping pressure on Turkish mills’ margins.
