Tokyo rebar mills consolidate
Japan’s Godo Steel has agreed to buy fellow rebar mini-mill Asahi Industries. The move further consolidates rebar supply in the Tokyo Bay area as demand for construction steel ramps up ahead of the 2020 Olympics, Kallanish notes.
Godo will take control of 86.96% of Asahi on 25 March, adding 600,000 tonnes/year to its bar and wire rod capacity. Kanto province also includes major rebar suppliers JFE Bars & Shapes and Tokyo Tekko and Itoh Iron and Steel.
