Steel surges as output falls
Chinese steel futures prices surged on Monday as the market finally adjusted to the more stable spot market. Another fall in steel production in early December also supported steel prices in the face of continuing weak demand, Kallanish notes.
The May 2016 rebar contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange closed up a massive CNY 53/tonne on Monday at CNY 1,749/t ($270/t), while the same contract for hot rolled coil closed up CNY 52/t at CNY 1,900/t.
