South African September iron ore production, exports drop
South African iron ore output decreased by 23.5% on-month in September 2023 but rose 3.2% on-year to 4.92 million tonnes, while nine-month production inched down 0.5% on-year to 48.81mt.
In September, the annual maintenance shutdown undertaken by rail and port operator Transnet and weather conditions at Saldanha port led to a significant, 33.7% on-year decline in exports to 3.89mt. Nine-month iron ore shipments at 41.75mt plummeted 17.2% on-year.
