Chinas private steelmakers gain share despite lower margins
China’s privately-owned steelmakers accounted for 53% of China’s crude steel production over January-August, producing 291.8 million tonnes, according to the China Chamber of Commerce for Metallurgical Enterprises, an association of private steel firms. The chamber warns, however, that privately-owned firms were still producing lower quality steel and held significant hidden debts, Kallanish notes.
