Pipe failure spills wastewater at US Steel

A failed pipe joint at US Steel’s Midwest Plant in Portage, Indiana, was responsible for a wastewater spill that resulted in the precautionary closure of several local beaches, the company says. The spill at the company’s tin electroplating line was immediately reported to government authorities because the water may have contained the carcinogenic compound hexavalent chromium, US Steel says.
