Philippine sand miner proposes steelworks project
Chinese-invested black sands miner Nicua Mining Corporation has proposed building a 3 million tonnes/year steelworks to further process the black sands it currently mines and concentrates at Leyte in the Philippines. The project follows the start of a government-led study into utilising black sands to make steel but Nicua has a troubled history with the Philippine’s newly-empowered environmental authorities, Kallanish notes.
