Mexican crude steel output fell by a slight 1.5% year-on-year to 1.5 million tonnes in March, Kallanish learns from the World Steel Association (worldsteel). Crude steel production in the first quarter totalled 4.3 million tonnes, or 6.6% less compared to the same timeframe in 2015, when it reached 4.6mt.

Following the result recorded in Q1 2016, Mexico confirms its status as second-largest steel producer in Nafta, accounting for 15.8% of regional output in the first three months of the year. This is a slightly lower compared to the 16.7% recorded in Q1 2015.

The country follows the US, which produced 19.6mt, or 71.2% of regional output in the first three months of the year, while Canada remained third with approximately 3.3mt, or 12.1% of Nafta crude steel production.

Mexico’s share of global steel output in the first quarter 2016 was 1.13%, down 0.2 percentage points on-year, Kallanish notes.
