ArcelorMittal is still assessing damage from a fire that began early 27 December at its Indiana Harbor facility, but it does not expect customer shipments to be impacted, Kallanish learns from a company spokesperson.

A “...water and molten iron reaction” sparked the fire, which damaged the facility’s steel production unit Indiana Harbor 4 Steel Producing (IH 4 SP), the spokesperson says. No injuries were reported as a result of the reaction or the fire.

“A timeline for repairs and the duration of the outage at IH 4 SP is currently being assessed,” the spokesperson says. “ArcelorMittal will ramp-up production at our other steel shops and use our inventory position to offset any lost production from IH 4 SP.
