EU replicating US mini-mills unlikely, alternatives available: Poveromo
European integrated flat steelmakers switching to electric arc furnaces will need to use 20-40% metallics in their feedstock mix to dilute scrap impurities, like US mini-mills have done. But they will be unable to replicate the US transition to EAF flat product mini-mills seen in the 1990s for various reasons, says Raw Materials & Ironmaking Global Consulting president Dr. Joseph Poveromo.
