Duterte stops mining on Tumbagaan Island
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday all mining operations on Tumbagaan Island in Tawi-Tawi Languyan need to be stopped. He asked relevant personnel to plant trees to rehabilitate the island, which has suffered environmental damage from mining activity.
Market reports suggest the impact of this shutdown on the nickel industry is limited, because the mines on the island are largely already in a state of suspension, Kallanish notes.
