Coal, freight hikes seen inflating Indian production costs
Coal India Limited (CIL)’s recent thermal coal price increase, coupled with the hike in freight rates for coal, are expected to add INR 150-500/tonne ($2.3-7.8) to production cost for India’s induction and EAF-based steelmakers. This is according to credit rating agency ICRA. Operating margins are seen declining 45-145 basis points at current price levels, unless these mills can pass on the cost increase.
