China drives global output growth again in May
World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association increased 5.4% on-year in May to 162.7 million tonnes, Kallanish learns from worldsteel.
This was driven by a 10% surge in Chinese output to 89.1mt, while Indian production grew 5.1% to 9.2mt. Japanese output, however, fell -4.6% to 8.7mt, although South Korean output increased 2.2% to 6.4mt. This meant Asia’s overall production increased 7.6% in May to 117.3mt.
