Crude steel production in the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) fell for a second consecutive month in September, by 9% on-year to 144.4 million tonnes. The drop was again the result of curbed production in China, Kallanish notes.

Compared to August, global output fell 6%.

Chinese crude steel production slumped 21% on-year in September to 73.75mt. However, Indian and Japanese output rose 7% and 26% respectively to 9.5mt and 8.1mt. South Korean and Vietnamese output fell 5% and 2% respectively to 5.46mt and 1.76mt.

EU27 output grew 16% in September to 12.7mt. German and Italian output increased 11% and 28% respectively to 3.34mt and 2.3mt. Spanish and French output rose 29% and 18% respectively to 1.2mt and 1.14mt.

EU27 output also rose 14% compared to August.

Turkish production grew 2.4% on-year to 3.3mt.

US production continued its strong resurgence, rising 22% in September to 7.29mt, while Brazilian output was up 15% to 3.05mt.

CIS production fell 1% to 8.23mt, with Russian output estimated down 2% to 5.86mt but Ukrainian output confirmed up 3% to 1.7mt.

Global crude steel production in January-September still grew 7.8% on-year to 1.46 billion tonnes, but slowed from 11% growth after eight months.
