China 2015 capacity cuts estimated at 60 million tonnes
Chinese steel industry closures picked up pace in 2015, with Macquarie counting some 60 million tonnes/year of closures and Hebei province saying it alone closed 6.3m t/y of capacity.
These figures don’t take into account the extent of churn in the industry, however, with many of those plants previously idled, many already planning to restart, and new furnaces still being brought online, Kallanish notes.
