Brazil approves dam safety policy
The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has banned all mining dams built using the upstream method in the country. The authority has also prohibited the further construction of such dams, according to its national dam safety policy approved on 19 May, Kallanish notes.
These measures follow the rupture of Dam 1 at Vale’s Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho on 25 January 2019, which resulted in 259 fatalities and 11 people unaccounted.
