BFs should use HBI to reduce emissions: Midrex
The use of natural gas-based hot-briquetted iron in blast furnaces is the most immediate method for reducing CO2 emissions, but merchant HBI availability is limited and additional HBI plants therefore need to be built. So says Midrex key account manager North America/Europe Sean Boyle.
Besides reducing emissions, HBI use can also increase BF productivity, when a steel mill needs more hot metal to satisfy steel production needs, or during a BF reline or repair.
