Australian EAF turns to solar to cut costs
Liberty OneSteel, now part of Sanjiv Gupta’s GFG Alliance, hopes to cut EAF steelmaking costs at its Laverton Steel Mill by as much as 40% by securing renewable energy supply. Sister company SIMEC Zen has signed an offtake deal with a local solar energy project to supply the 710,000 tonnes/year EAF and long rolling mills, Kallanish notes.
