Arrium cuts Whyalla jobs as costs bite
Australia’s Arrium is cutting another 250 jobs at its Whyalla steelworks as the country’s steelmakers struggle to reduce costs. The move comes after the company last month announced plans to reduce costs by A$100 million ($71m) over two years, Kallanish notes.
200 full time jobs and 50 contractor positions will be cut at the 1.2 million tonne/year steelworks. The company had already said it would cut 55 jobs at the site in October.
