ArcelorMittal Poland (AMP) expects the modernised oxygen converter no.3 at its flagship Dabrowa Gornicza steelworks to carry out its first melt on 12 December. Cold tests will commence at the beginning of December.

“We’re taking the next step in the direction of improving health and safety, and environmental standards, as well modernising and automating technological processes,” Dabrowa Gornicza director Tomasz Dziwniel says in a note seen by Kallanish. “The modernisation of peripheral units, which we are carrying out simultaneously in our plant, will ensure stable production for decades to come.”

Dabrowa Gornicza’s basic oxygen furnace no.1 was modernised in 2016, while BOF no.2 was revamped in 2014. The latest revamp has been carried out by a consortium of Primetals and ZKS Ferrum.

AMP said last week it will wait until 2021 before deciding on whether to renovate blast furnace no.2 at Dabrowa Gornicza. That will be when the implications become clear of the latest revision to the EU Emissions Trading System (see Kallanish 24 November).
