Sumitomo turns to New Caledonia for nickel supply
Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining (SMM) plans to source 79% of its nickel ore from French-owned New Caledonia in the year ending March 2016, down from 70% the previous year. The remainder will come from the Philippines, according to president Yoshiaki Nakazato. Nickel ore buyers have been adjusting their strategies over the last 17 months in the face of a ban on ore exports from Indonesia, Kallanish notes.
