Chinas Delong invests in Indonesian nickel smelter
China’s Delong Nickel Industry intends to commission a new 600,000 tonne/year nickel pig iron smelter in Indonesia by the end of the year and could expand the plant to 3 million t/y, it says. The $5 billion investment comes as China, and other stainless steel producers attempt to secure nickel supply in the face of Indonesia’s unrefined raw material export ban, which was imposed last year, Kallanish notes.
