China starts building East Route Russian gas pipeline
Construction began on the Chinese section of the East Route Natural Gas Pipeline on Monday, which will link China to Russian gas fields. The pipeline will be able to transport some 38 billion cubic metres/year of gas into the country, according to Xinhua.
The $77 billion project is expected to consume around 1 million tonnes of steel on the Chinese side and almost as much again on the Russian stretch, Kallanish notes.
