China shut 31.1 million t/y of steelmaking in 2014
China eliminated 31.1 million tonnes/year of outdated steel capacity in 2014, up from its target of 27m t/y, according the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). No target has been set for 2015, but the policy is expected to recede in importance as the weak market and environmental pressures come to the forefront of reducing excess capacity, Kallanish notes.
