China Steel approves $46 million ethanol project
Taiwan’s China Steel has approved a plan to build a 52,000 tonnes/year waste gas-to-ethanol project. The technology, provided by Lanzatech, has expanded rapidly from its first lab tests at New Zealand Steel seven years ago, Kallanish notes.
The $46 million project will produce fuel grade ethanol from carbon monoxide emitted by the steelwork’s basic oxygen furnaces. The 52,000 t/y unit could later be expanded to 100,000 t/y.
