China-Australia FTA aborts coal levies
China has signed a memorandum of understanding on a free trade agreement (FTA) with key supplier Australia which will see a 3% import duty on coking coal removed immediately and a 6% duty on thermal coal within two years. The duties had been imposed only on 15 October. The news will be welcome to Australia’s already troubled miners, though it is far from enough to pull them out of their current predicament, Kallanish notes.
