Bayi demolishes blast furnaces but capacity problem remains
Bayi Iron and Steel (Bagang), a Baosteel subsidiary in far north western China’s Xinjiang province, has completed the demolition of two blast furnaces with a combined capacity of 1 million tonnes/year. This is in line with central government demands for closures, Kallanish notes. The loss-making division continues however to house one of Baosteel’s relocated Corex units, meaning that capacity has still seen a net increase over the last year.
