Japanese automaker Subaru is preparing for the launch of its first fully electric car model for Europe, to be launched in the “first half of the 2020s,” Kallanish learns from the company.

The electric vehicle will be a mid-size SUV, similar in size to the Subaru Forester, and will be built on a platform shared with Toyota. Subaru Europe confirmed the news this week but said further details will be revealed “sometime next year.”

This is the second electrification step the company is taking in Europe, after it recently launched mild-hybrid variants of two core models in the region. Currently, the Subaru XV e-BOXER and Forester e-BOXER models account for 60% of the company’s sales in Europe.

“The news underlines Subaru’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint in Europe and satisfy a growing demand for alternative powertrains,” the firm says.

European carmakers are rushing to electrify their lineup to comply with regional legislation and meet growing demand. Subaru sees EVs and hybrid electric vehicles accounting for at least 40% of its global sales by 2030. Full electrification of its portfolio should happen around 2035, it said in January.

Some market observers suggest the strategy might be a “little too late” to ensure Subaru’s survival in a carbon-neutral world.
