Russia plans to occupy 20-25% of the global hydrogen trade by 2035, says deputy energy minister Pavel Sorokin.

"This is a market in which Russia has a very large potential, our task is to occupy 20% of the global hydrogen trade market by 2030,” he said during a meeting in the Ministry of Energy at Monday, his press office confirmed to Kallanish. “It is still difficult to estimate this in numbers, but we believe that it could be from 1 million tonnes/year to 2m t/y in the low scenario and up to 7m t/y in 2035 with more active rapid development."

Sorokin recalled that a "road map" for the development of hydrogen energy has already been approved, and now a concept for the development of the hydrogen industry in Russia is being prepared, after which a corresponding strategy will be adopted.

According to the roadmap, the development concept was supposed to appear in the first quarter of 2021.

In line with the government's energy strategy approved last June, Russia has outlined plans to take advantage of the country's proximity to potential markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region and has foreseen exports of up to 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen in 2024 and 2m t/y in 2035.

An idea was floated last year that Russia could use the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to transport hydrogen to Europe. The pipeline project is in the final stages of construction. US sanctions have threatened the future of the project, which is backed by European energy companies. Defying Washington, Nord Stream 2 AG has resumed the final pipelaying of the project this year.
