Donald Trump vows to end EV ‘mandate’ in inauguration speech
Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, Kallanish reports.
In his inauguration speech on Monday, he promised a “golden age of America” and made a series of promises on immigration, the economy and freedom of speech, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” He stated: “For American citizens, January 20, 2025 is liberation day.”
Trump said his administration will focus on reviving the country’s manufacturing ecosystem, promising to end what he calls the “electric vehicle mandate.” EV production and sales were incentivised under the Biden administration, but the federal government never set a mandate.
“We will end the Green New Deal, and we will revoke the electric vehicle mandate, saving our auto industry and keeping my sacred pledge to our great American auto workers. In other words, you’ll be able to buy the car of your choice,” Trump said.
He vowed that the domestic automotive industry will boost production “again at a rate that nobody could have dreamt possible just a few years ago.”
The president, elected for the second time, also hinted at new tariffs: “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens.”
“For this purpose, we are establishing the external revenue service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources,” he continues.
Trump also repeated his “drill baby drill” slogan, claiming that the US holds the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, and they will be harnessed to boost the country’s manufacturing sector as well as be exported. According to OPEC, Venezuela holds the largest oil reserves globally.
Trump said the “liquid gold under our feet” will make the US a “rich nation again.”
