Is a noose tightening around Chinese steel exports? (April 4, 2025)

Chinese steel exports have dominated global steel markets in the last two years. Now, they face growing trade protectionism, weak demand, tighter export controls and a strong government focus on supporting domestic demand. Global markets, beyond just steel, are fully focussed on the latest trade barriers being raised in the USA, as well as the responses of other trading partners. 

But while the world is watching the USA’s headline-grabbing, and potentially recession-driving, tariffs, is China quietly implementing a trade tax that the global steel industry would find highly welcome? And could China’s exports undershoot our previous expectations as a result?
