The Mexican automotive sector saw its production and exports improve month-on-month in February. Domestic sales, however, were weaker, Kallanish notes.

According to the Asociación Mexicana de la Indústria Automotriz (Amia), February’s output increased by 1.6% on-month to 317,178 units but was 2.659 vehicles, or 0.8%, below the level seen a year ago.

Of the 12 manufacturers monitored by Amia, General Motors had the largest monthly output of 69,885 units, followed by Nissan which produced 59,731 vehicles. Output at Ford Motor and Stellantis (Chrysler and Fiat) was 34,301 and 31,585 units, respectively.

Two-month production amounted to 629,435 vehicles, up 2,517 units compared with January-February 2024. Light trucks represented almost 75% or 472,361 units of total Mexican automotive production in the period.

February’s vehicle exports rose 18% on-month to 258,952 units but were down 9.2% year-on-year. Cumulative exports reached 478,366 vehicles, a decrease of 11.4% on-year. Shipments to the US market had 84.2% share at 402,986 units, an 8% decline from January-February 2024.

Sales to the domestic market fell on-month in February. These were 1.9% less than in January at 117,679 units but 2.9% higher y-o-y. Two-month shipments to the domestic market reached 237,659 vehicles, up 4.5% on-year, Amia adds.
