The Biden administration must support the $250 billion cumulative investment planned by domestic automakers by 2023 with a “comprehensive” national auto electrification strategy, according to a letter sent to President Joe Biden by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.

The alliance represents 99% of domestic auto producers and OEM manufacturers, Kallanish notes. The letter was cosigned by the United Autoworkers union and the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association.

“This is not just about the future of the auto industry in the US, it is about the nation’s global competitiveness, economic security, and the transition of the US workforce,” the letter states. “Nations that lead the development and adoption of innovative technologies will also shape supply chains and job creation, define global standards and, potentially, reshape the international marketplace.”

The US is behind on nearly all electrification fronts, the letter warns.

“Efforts that incentivize wider-scale EV adoption, build out the necessary infrastructure, and facilitate consumer awareness are essential components to EV market expansion,” the alliance says. “As we work toward the future of clean transportation, it will be critical to ensure this transition benefits all communities, supports American workers, and enhances US competitiveness and economic security.”
