Indian steel major AMNS India has received approval to import 71,500 tonnes of metallurgical coke from Poland as the vessel departed for India before the imposition of coke import quotas on 1 January 2025, Kallanish learns from sources.

Speculation has been rife in the Indian market that AMNS has been granted a full exemption from the import quotas for cargoes from Poland and Indonesia. However, company officials have dismissed the claims as unfounded.

“They [authorities] were initially hesitant to even allow this shipment that sailed before 31 December. There’s no special exemption just for AMNS India,” a company source tells Kallanish.

India has imposed quarterly met coke import quotas of 0.7 million tonnes through June 2025. Major coke suppliers to India include Indonesia, China, Poland, and Colombia.

AMNS India has a crude steel production capacity of 9 million tonnes/year. The company has been a consistent importer of Polish met coke for years. However, with the quotas now in place, it is facing supply constraints, affecting operations at its steel plant.
