RARE EARTH: Rio Tinto produces first North American scandium oxide
Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto says it has produced its first batch of high-purity scandium oxide at its commercial-scale demonstration plant at Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Kallanish reports.
That makes subsidiary Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) the first North American producer of the critical rare earth mineral that is derived from mining wastes and used in solid oxide fuel cells and in aluminium alloys.
